Apprenticeship Day

April is Community College Awareness Month and Apprenticeship Appreciation Day falls on April 30th.

For the past 80 plus years, Lake Region State College has been an access point for higher education. Thousands of students have started the first half of their bachelor’s degree or completed a workforce ready certificate, diploma, or degree through LRSC.

In recent years, LRSC has become a leader in nontraditional apprenticeships. These apprenticeships give students a well-rounded education that brings together academic knowledge and real-world experience. Responsive to employer needs, LRSC has increased its apprenticeship program into numerous careers.

By weaving apprenticeships into the curriculum, the college makes sure students get hands-on experience in their chosen fields. This practical approach not only boosts their employability but also sharpens their professional skills for when they graduate.

The apprenticeship program was the right fit for student Andrew Volk.

“The opportunity to engage in hands-on learning within the career field, while simultaneously taking classes, has significantly enhanced my on-the-job learning,” Volk said.

Volk, who is doing his computer science apprenticeship with ND University System Core Technology Services, says it has been a wonderful experience.

“CTS has been exceptional to collaborate with, demonstrating a strong understanding of my workload, which includes a full-time job, college classes, and responsibilities as a parent. Lake Region has also provided considerable support throughout the program. Whenever I have questions, encounter issues, or require assistance, my problems are consistently resolved within a day,” he said.

These apprenticeships are a valuable blend of classroom learning and on-the-job training, allowing students to apply their academic lessons in real-world settings. At LRSC, these apprenticeships span various industries, including healthcare, computer science technology, manufacturing, and business. The diverse range ensures students from different academic disciplines can benefit from the program.

“Apprenticeship programs are a win for students and employers,” said Melana Howe Resource Development/Corporate Liaison/Apprenticeships at Lake Region State College.

LRSC has been working with apprenticeship programs for the last five years. The Nursing apprenticeship program was made in collaboration with the North Dakota Board of Nursing.

“The strong partnerships with business and industry are a vital piece of the apprenticeship program’s success. Government entities like CTS also can be a great apprenticeship partner,” Howe said.

There are many reasons why apprenticeships work, Howe said. This includes:
•    Skill Development: Apprenticeships offer students the chance to develop and refine their skills with guidance from industry professionals. This hands-on learning ensures they acquire competencies directly relevant to their future careers.
•    Industry Exposure: Through apprenticeships, students gain insight into their chosen industries' workings. This exposure is invaluable in helping them understand professional expectations, challenges, and dynamics.
•    Networking Opportunities: Collaborating with experienced professionals allows students to build a network of industry contacts. These connections can be instrumental in securing employment and advancing their careers.
•    Enhanced Employability: Employers value candidates with practical experience. Completing an apprenticeship bolsters students' resumes, making them more attractive to potential employers and increasing their chances of receiving top-tier job offers upon graduation.

“Overall, the apprenticeship program has offered me an amazing opportunity that has allowed me to advance my career in my desired field, as well as be a great dad for my kid,” Volk said.
