Guide to Studying in the U.S.
The guide contains information about the various steps of the international student process, including how to:
Prepare. Travel. Study. Apply for student benefits. Change status. Depart.
International students are required to purchase a health insurance policy provided by United Healthcare. Please discuss the policy with the International Student Advisor. (Canadian and Norwegian students are exempt from the health insurance purchase requirement.)
The beds in our residence halls are twin-size, extra-long. The sheets are size TWIN XL. Bedding is not provided for you, but at your written request, a basic set of bedding and towels (twin XL sheets, pillow, blanket, bath towel, and hand towel) will be purchased by LRSC staff and placed in your room prior to arrival. The cost for the bedding and towels will be added to your student account.
My first week at Lake Region State College, I struggled because the flight was the longest I have ever had. It was a 30 hour flight and I was very tired. The second day I did the registration for new students and I enjoyed the activities and the party during Welcome Week. I am satisfied with my study abroad experience because I can see different cultures and different people. My favorite thing about studying at LRSC is that you see people from other countries.
Lake Region State College is a community college which means it offers two degree options. Students may enroll in the transfer-track where they complete the first two years of a four-year bachelor degree program, or enroll in one of about twenty technical programs which can be completed in two years.
Students who enroll in the transfer-track complete two years of liberal arts study at LRSC and transfer to the universities of their choice as junior-status (third-year) college students. This transfer process is very common in the United States, and students who work closely with their advisors experience no difficulty making the transfer from Lake Region State College to a university.
Go to Academic Departments for tranfer-track programs.
Students who enroll in technical programs are prepared for quick entry into the workforce with earning power that, in some cases, out-paces bachelor degree graduates. Most technical degrees include requirements for a number of general education courses. Often, students complete a technical degree and the transfer-track degree simultaneously, creating an opportunity to earn good wages while continuing their education.
Go to CTE Programs for career and technical programs.
I first intended to come to the States to play basketball and study at the same time. My goal was a different environment to what I am used to. This was what came into play when i chose Lake Region: it's a small town compared to the city I'm used to and a completely different atmosphere. I saw this as a good experience and decided to pursue it. My coach had told me it is a family environment and everyone is very friendly including the girls I would play with, this helped me gain confidence in making the big decision. The university has met my expectations to a high standard, the students and teachers are very understanding, caring and very helpful and are always there when I need something or miss something because we were away for a game.
International Scholars are international students who are interested in sharing information about their countries and their cultures. There are many different ways to do this including, sharing a recipe from your home so that we may experience your food prepared at Lake Region State College, carrying your country’s flag at graduation, volunteering at events on campus, or sharing pictures from your home. Some students give presentations about their country at events on campus and in the community. In exchange for sharing your culture with us, you receive a reduced tuition rate.
