LRSC student earns Coca Cola Leaders of Promise scholarship

Every spring, eligible Lake Region State College students are invited to join Phi Theta Kappa. This is a society of scholars focused on improving educational standards.

Many members enjoy the perks of this society through a variety of scholarships. This year, LRSC student and Phi Theta Kappa member Michaela Osborne received a very prestigious award.

Osborne has received the 2019 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar. The Leaders of Promise award is $1,000 in scholarship. Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholars are selected based on outstanding academic achievement and demonstrations of leadership potential. This scholarship is sponsored by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. This Program recognizes 200 Phi Theta Kappa members with awards totaling $200,000.

This year’s recipients were selected by a panel of independent judges from nearly 900 applicants. This program was launched in 2001 to assist new Phi Theta Kappa members in obtaining an associate degree and encourage participation in Society programs. The Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship is most relevant today as the organization, colleges and communities actively encourage the completion of a college credential, an associate degree or certificate among college students.

Michaela’s dedication, leadership skills, and hard work made her a worthy candidate for this award as well as have set her up for success.

This award is just one instance that exemplifies how hard work is acknowledged and rewarded through Phi Theta Kappa as 91 percent of Phi Theta Kappa members will complete an associate degree or transfer to a four-year college, compared to just 38 percent of students nationally. Members have access to nearly $90 million in scholarships, can gain leadership experience, and can learn essential workplace skills employers seek. In addition, more than 750 four-year colleges and universities have established more than $37 million in transfer scholarships exclusively for Phi Theta Kappa members. The average transfer scholarship a member could receive is $2,500. This society provides students with financial opportunity and guidance to reach their educational and professional goals.

The mission of Phi Theta Kappa is to recognize academic achievement of college students and to provide opportunities for them to grow as scholars and leaders.

Membership in Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society guarantees you access to benefits that will recognize your outstanding academic accomplishments and provide you with the competitive edge that helps ensure future success. These benefits are unmatched by any other collegiate honor society. In 2018 Phi Theta Kappa celebrates its 100th anniversary.
