Florence Lake Service Scholarship -- $1000 Earn $1,000 for being a volunteer!
Service Scholarships provide wonderful opportunities for students and the community. In exchange for help with the cost of their college education, energetic students work on self-designed service projects that make a positive difference in the community.
Apply today for the Florence Lake Service Scholarship. Only 10 of these scholarships are awarded each year. Deadline to apply is Friday, September 3, 2010.
Each successful applicant must design and carry out an 80-hour service plan which addresses three categories: services to community, to the college, and in the student’s field of study. Students chosen to be Service Scholars receive awards of $1,000 to help pay college costs the semester after their service plans are completed.
Applications for the Service Scholarship are accepted twice per year, during September and January. Part-time students may apply for half awards. A Service Scholarsip application can be obtained from the Student Services Office.
Applicants are asked to describe the kind(s) of service activities they would like to pursue. Applicants are also asked to state whether they would like to be assigned a mentor to work with during the service period (see “Mentor Option”).
To qualify as a candidate, a student must have a completed application for enrollment on file with Lake Region State College Admissions Office or be currently enrolled in good standing with at least another semester remaining in his or her educational plan.
All applications are reviewed by a screening committee, and selected candidates are asked to report for interviews. Students chosen to be Service Scholars must finalize their plans and have them approved by their mentors or college liaisons before beginning their service work.
Should a situation arise that prevents or delays progress on service work, Service Scholars are asked to immediately contact their mentors or liaisons. Scholars are asked to prepare written summaries of their experience when service work is completed and submit it to their college liaisons. For further information on the Service Scholarship Program, contact Erin Wood, Marketing and Public Relations at 662-1598.
