This is a growing, exciting profession and Speech Pathology Assistants are in very high demand. SLPAs work one-on-one and in groups with children and adults in clinics and in school settings, to enhance communication skills.

SLPA graduates earn Associate in Applied Science degree and meet North Dakota standards for employment as Speech Language Pathology Paraprofessionals in school settings.

Every spring a limited number of students are accepted in cohort groups and complete the program in four semesters and one summer session. All SLPA courses (except practicum experience) are available online, making this program accessible to learners anytime and anywhere.

Program Requirements
Prior to acceptance to SLPA program all applicants must complete or provide proof of enrollment (academic transcript) in the following prerequisite courses:


• Human Structure and Function (BIOL 115)
• Survey of Communication Disorders (CD 110)
• College Composition I (ENGL 110)
• Introduction to Computers (CSCI 101)


Career Opportunities
Career opportunities for Speech Language Pathology Assistants are widely available in the public school system. Trained SLPA's are hired by school districts in urban, suburban and rural areas. SLPAs can also be employed in the private sector in hospital SLP departments, rehabilitation clinics and private practice with SLP's.

2005 Job Service North Dakota statistics show there were 480 jobs available statewide in SLPA field, and over 23,000 job openings were available in 2005 nationwide.

Application Process
Before being accepted in the SLPA Program you must complete or be currently enrolled in prerequisite courses. Applications are accepted annually until mid-November.

To be considered for admission into the program you must complete the following steps:

  1. Apply for admission to LRSC
  2. Complete all requirements for admission to SLPA program including:
    - Letter of application
    - Two letters of reference
    - Transcript(s)for courses completed (or in progress) to meet prerequisite requirements (Academic Record Form)
  3. Transcript(s) for courses completed (in progress) to meet the following prerequisite requirements:
    - Prerequisite GPA minimum 2.5
    - CD 110, ENGL 110, CSCI 101, BIOL 111
    - Cumuluative college GPA minimum 2.25
