Peace Officer Training

First and the only in North Dakota Lake Region State College is the only college in the state of North Dakota authorized to deliver a North Dakota POST Board certified police academy. The Peace Officer Training program at Lake Region State College is a rigorous one-semester course designed for people who wish to pursue a career in law enforcement. The Certificate is considered a starting point in the new officer's education. Successful completion of the program allows graduates to become “licensable” as a peace officer with North Dakota POST Board.
Since 1987 Lake Region State College has graduated over 800 students from the Peace Officer Training program with a 100 percent employment rate for those graduates that actively sought employment as police officers or deputy sheriffs in the State of North Dakota.
Instructors for the Peace Officer Training program include over 40 law enforcement professionals from 16 law enforcement agencies (police departments, sheriff’s departments, ND Highway Patrol, ND Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and the Department of Homeland Security), each has special expertise in his/her content area and excellent teaching skills.

When and Where Peace Officer Training is one-semester course which combines classroom learning, practical application and physical fitness training. The program is offered every Spring and Fall semesters at the Devils Lake campus and also is available in Fargo, ND during the summer.
Students will attend numerous law related classes, participate in defensive tactics, first aid, accident investigation, and firearms training. They also will learn search and seizure, evidence collection techniques, fingerprinting, radio procedures, radar and emergency vehicle operation, etc. The Peace Officer Training Program can be taken as a stand alone program or as the final semester of the two-year Associate in Applied Science degree in Law Enforcement.

Who is eligible? To be eligible for entry into the Peace Officer Training Program, candidates must:
- Be turning 20 years old during the Peace Officer Training program
OR be at least 19 years old and have been out of high school for at least 1 full year
- Have high school diploma or GED
- Have attained an overall 2.0 GPA if he/she has completed prior post-secondary course work
- Have a valid driver's license
- Have NO points accumulated against his/her driver's license at the time of graduation from the program
- Be eligible under Drug Use and Criminal History Guidelines for Admission

Career paths
The opportunity to serve as professional law enforcement officer is an honor and a privilege. Most of the jobs in law enforcement are challenging and involve a lot of personal responsibility.
Graduates from LRSC Peace Officer Training program are facing growing employment opportunities with a variety of local agencies and successfully serve as police officers and deputy sheriffs. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics expects as fast as average growth for all occupations in law enforcement through 2014. It also states that applicants with college training, military experience, or both should have the best opportunities.

Take it further!
Put your skills to work and advance your education by completing the Associate in Applied Science degree in Law Enforcement. All courses required for the AAS in Law Enforcement (with the exception of the Peace Officer Training Program classes) are available through distance education (online and/or IVN). It is also a great opportunity for those who would like to pursue career in Law Enforcement but do not satisfy the minimum age requirement. Start working on your degree and complete Peace Officer Training during the final semester of the two-year track. For those who have already taken the Peace officer Training Program, this is a great opportunity to complete your two-year degree while still working full time!

Where do I start? All applicants to Peace Officer Training program are carefully screened and must meet eligibility standards as indicated above. If you are eligible, there are several steps to follow during the application process:
- Complete Peace Officer Training Application Form and the Authorization to Release Information Form
- Pass a ND POST Approved Psychological Examination.
- Undergo a thorough background investigation to include fingerprint processing by both the ND Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the FBI (Background Investigation fee is $80.00)
- Complete the LRSC Application for Admission.
- Complete Medical/Physical exam administered by your personal physician (Medical Exam Form)
- Participate in personal interview with director of Peace Officer Training Program
