Paralegal -- Legal assistant

The Paralegal Program at Lake Region State College is created under American Bar Association guidelines and designed to prepare students for careers as paralegals (legal assistants) in law firms, governmental agencies, public service organizations and corporate legal departments.

Opportunities
  • Gain knowledge and develop career skills towards a one-year certificate or two-year degree.

  • With day and evening courses you don't have to give up your life to go to school! Work with your advisor and arrange your classes around work schedule and day-to-day responsibilities.

  • Don't live in Devils Lake? Not a problem. Take advantage of distance education! Legal Assistant program is now available online and numerous IVN courses are offered for students in Minot, Bismarck, Williston and Fargo.

  • A paralegal internship is designed to help you gain skills and experience by working in private law firms and various public agencies.

Certificate vs. Associate degree
One-year Certificate program is designed for students who are currently employed in legal field and with to improve their skills and/or advance their career.

The Associate in Applied Science degree curriculum consists of in-depth legal specialty classes along with a general basic education. Work closely with your advisor if you plan to transfer into 4-year university.

Internships
Students are required to complete a minimum of 240 hours of internship after first year of study. Graduates consider internship to be extremely valuable experience.

Career Path
With paralegals and other non-attorney law office positions in high demand, there's no better time to enter the legal profession. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics expects faster than average growth for Legal Assistants through 2012, and shows need for over 73,000 additional employees nationwide.
