Opportunities

• Gain knowledge and develop career skills towards a one-year certificate or two-year degree.

• Flexible course of study - day, evening and online classes are available, attend as a part-time or full-time student.

• Courses are designed to be meaningful for individuals from a range of backgrounds and differing levels of past experiences with young children.

• Internship will help you to gain practical experience working with children at the College Care for Kids and/or in early childhood education programs in the community.

Certificates and Degrees

The Certificate program is designed as a one year, fast-track program in order to prepare you for immediate entry-level employment working with young children in group settings such as child care center or for starting a home business as a family child care provider.

The two-year Associate in Applied Science degree program helps qualify students to operate nursery schools, become employed by Head Start Programs and work as para-professionals in Public Education classrooms. Along with courses in Early Childhood Education, students complete a variety of courses to fulfill General Education requirements and build a solid educational background.

Internships

While in the program, students have an opportunity to gain practical experience working with children at the College Care for Kids and in early childhood programs within your community. Both Certificate and Degree programs require 154 hours of internship work.

Continue your education

Students who are interested in going on for a teaching degree can take extra courses to fulfill the General Education requirements for the Associate in Arts degree. A state-wide articulation agreement exists for Elementary Education in North Dakota. The Counseling Office will have more information about existing articulation agreements with Secondary Education and other education programs across North Dakota.

Employment opportunities

The Associate of Science degree in Early Childhood Education prepares students to work professionally with young children in a variety of ways including preschool, Head Start, home childcare, Public Schools, and other childcare facilities.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics expects much faster than average growth (36%) for all occupations in Early Childhood Education field through 2012, and shows the need for more than 200,000 additional employees nationwide by 2012.
