American Sign Language

& Interpreting Studies

The American Sign Language and

Interpreting Studies (ASLIS) program is

delivered through a partnership between

LRSC and the North Dakota School for the

Deaf (NDSD). Located one block from NDSD,

Lake Region State College is ideally situated

to offer the program. Students have access

to the sign language environment at NDSD

and the large deaf community which resides

in the Lake Region area.

Admission to the ASLIS program requires

basic knowledge of ASL. Prior to acceptance

into the program, applicants must complete

ASL 101 and ASL 102 with grades of B or

better; OR applicants must demonstrate

proficiency in ASL. The program offers two

levels of training.

The Certificate in ASLIS gives students the

opportunity to increase their understanding

of deaf culture while developing fluency in

American Sign Language and is beneficial to

students enrolled in related programs such

as Early Childhood Education and Practical

Nursing.

Students who complete the Associate in

Applied Science (AAS) degree have entry-

level skill as American Sign Language

interpreters. The services of sign language

interpreters are needed in a variety of

settings including education (pre-school

through college), medical, human service,

legal, and performance arts.

The program of study for the AAS degree

includes an internship where participants

train with professional interpreters who

work with deaf individuals. Students take

the Educational Interpreter Performance

Assessment (EIPA) as a program exit

evaluation.
