Online courses require self motivation and a commitment from you. Before you enroll in any LRSC online courses, answer the following questions to see how well this style of learning suits your talents and lifestyle.
- Do you have regular access to a computer with an Internet connection? Online courses require regular access to a computer with an Internet connection. If one is not readily available, you will have a difficult time completing the course requirements.
- Do you know how to use email and word processing software? Having an active email account is necessary for taking an online course. If you are unfamiliar with either of these applications, we suggest you take some basic training in these areas before attempting an online course.
- Would you like the opportunity to exchange ideas with classmates from all over the country? Communicating with your classmates and instructor is an important part of the course. You may work in small groups or you may be asked to participate in an online discussion. You will be able to get to know your classmates as share your thoughts with them.
- Would you like to have the freedom to choose, day-to-day, when you attend class and when you study? Online classes allow you to do this. However, online classes follow the regular college calendar. You will need to login and begin working the first week of your course, keep up with the course schedule and complete your assignments on time.
- Are you self motivated and self disciplined or do you leave things until the last minute? It is easy to put off schoolwork and get behind. You need to be able to plan and schedule consistent time to participate in and work on class activities.
- Do you have good reading and writing skills? Online classes are reading intensive. Most courses require the purchase of a textbook. Supplemental materials and activities are read online. You also should feel comfortable expressing your thoughts in writing and typing up your homework assignments.
- Do you have an average of 9 to 12 hours to study each week? Online courses may require more time than a traditional class. The responsibility for learning is on you.
- Do your family and friends support your decision to take an online course? Friends and family will need to respect your study time. Finding someone to encourage you and help keep you on track can help you be successful.
- Will online learning be right for you? If you think you would like to try online learning you can apply for admissions and register for classes by logging into CampusConnection. If you are unsure how to use CampusConnection see the CampusConnection help sheet documents. Or if you prefer personal help you can call the Office of Continuing Education at 701-662-1510 or email LRSC.Continuing.Education@lrsc.edu.
