Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Celebrates 10th Anniversary

Lake Region State College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society recognized its 10-year anniversary April 26th.

The Beta Pi Upsilon chapter of PTK, International Honor Society, celebrated its 10th anniversary within days of the headquarters celebrating its centennial celebration, said LRSC PTK Advisor Teresa Tande. The group also held initiation ceremonies of new members.

For the 2017-18 year, PTK had about 65 members on campus, online, and at the Air Base. Also inducted were two honorary members: Dr. Randy Fixen and Dr. Doug Darling, both of whom had roles in the first ceremony in 2008.

“Dr. Fixen has been in charge of the scholarship program of PTK since the beginning, and even serving in a similar capacity before PTK came to campus. Dr. Darling has been an advocate of the advantages PTK provides. He is certified in its elite leadership training and was chosen as one of PTK’s 20 outstanding presidents for 2016,” Tande said.

New officers were also inducted. Following last year’s trend of co-officers, this year the chapter chose to do the same.

Co-Presidents                  Harry Reemst and Maria Quiroz

Co-Vice-Presidents          Kendall Parker and Sadie Schilling

Co-Secretaries                Maggie Gilbert and Kayla Hinrichsen

PR                                 Grantley Middenhall

The chapter was busy this past year promoting the love of reading through three key activities: book give away at the City Plaza, Gingerbread houses modeled from favorite books…and the book, too, of course, and the Harry Potter Escape Room.

Former president Sharon Etemad had as one of her last goals before retiring (2008) establishing a PTK Chapter on campus. She approached Teresa Tande within days of Tande’s starting her full-time position at LRSC. Tande remains the adviser 10 years later.
