TRiO champions celebrated

By   Dana Zinke

Once a year, TRiO supporters take a day to remember and celebrate TRiO; what it stands for, its history, and its educational impact locally and nationally in regards to students who are low-income, disabled, or first generation. LRSC’s TRiO/PowerSkills took a day and celebrated on May 4, however, in conjunction with our celebration, we also took a moment and honored what we call our ‘TRiO Champions.’

While TRiO/PowerSkills staff continues to make significant moves to assist students with academics, transferring, career exploration, and many other resources, without the support of LRSC’s faculty and staff, we would not be as impactful. Two individuals, our TRiO Champions, stood out this year, and not only provided additional support for our staff, but opened up opportunities for students to excel and be successful.

Carla Freschette, Web Developer/Designer, has been instrumental with her ‘can do’ attitude, and assistance with our social media needs to get the word out about student activities. While we would like to think we are ‘technology savvy’, there is nothing like someone with the expertise that is willing to assist and even guide our efforts. Thank you, Carla!

Kristi Kienast Hernandez, Math Instructor/International Student Advisor, has been deeply influential with assisting students to be successful in math and collaborating with TRiO/PowerSkills. Math can be challenging, and can cause uncertainty even for the most dedicated of students. However, with Kristi working with our staff, we were able to reach more students, and provide the necessary resources to be successful. Thank you, Kristi!
