LRSC Coaches go barefoot for a cause

By   Jared Marshall

Lake Region State College Men’s and Women’s Basketball Coaches will coach in their bare feet on Wednesday, February 17 against Dakota College at Bottineau in the last home game of the season. The games begin at 6:30pm at the sports center. Women’s  head coach Danny Mertens and assistant Shelby Krueger along with Men's head coach Jared Marshall and assistant Shane Hersch will all participate. Coach Mertens is in his 3rd year as a barefoot coach; this will be Coach Marshall’s first year as a barefoot head coach.

Samaritan’s Feet is a humanitarian aid organization that shares a message of hope and love through washing the feet of impoverished children around the world and adorning them with new shoes. There are an estimated 2.2 billion people who can’t afford basic necessities like shoes and more than 1.5 billion infected with parasitic diseases transmitted through contaminated soil. Shoes and socks continue to be in the “Top 5 Items Schools Need You to Donate.” Since its founding by Manny and Tracie Ohonme in 2003, Samaritan’s Feet and its team of ambassadors and partners have blessed more than 6.5 million children in more than 75 countries and more than 325 U.S. cities. Since 2013, over 2,100 children across North Dakota (Bismarck, Devils Lake, Fargo and Grand Forks) have been impacted by this simple gesture of sharing hope and love while helping those in need to believe that their dreams can come true.

“Lake Region and Devils Lake are very special to our organization” said Denise Blomberg, Regional Director for Samaritan’s Feet. “ Manny (Ohonme), came to Devils Lake from Nigeria to play basketball at Lake Region (then UND-Lake Region) and met his wife, Tracie, while there.  Since 2014, student athletes from all sports, along with their coaches and community volunteers from the Devils Lake area have come together to bless almost 400 children with a new pair of shoes and socks as part of our “Back to School” program. The support we have received here is incredible!”

Anyone can make a donation to Samaritan’s Feet by texting SHOE to 41444 or by visiting the Samaritan’s Feet table during the games. For more information, visit

There will be free admission to anyone who brings a new pair of shoes to donate. This will also be the kickoff of our 750 pairs of shoes for 75 years of LRSC. Where we are hoping to get 750 pairs of shoes donated here in the area.

A lot of great events going on tomorrow night for the final regular season game for the Royals. We need your support so come on out and pack the sports center.
