LRSC Playmakers present Crimes of the Heart

By   Erin Wood

Local talent will light up the stage this week.

The LRSC Playmakers will perform “Crimes of the Heart” theatrical production this weekend at the Robert Fawcett Auditorium. Performances will take place Thursday, November 19 through the 21 at 7:00 p.m. and on November 22 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are available at the door for $10 for adults and $5 for seniors. The show contains some adult language and content.

The performances are sponsored in part by the North Dakota Council on the Arts and produced by special arrangement with the Dramatists Play Service.

Jasmine Swinland plays Lenny, Kaitlyn Halvorson plays Babe, Paityn Gage plays Meg, Dilyn Plyemel Plays Doc, Sara Leach plays Chick and Dylan Veer plays Barnette.  They are all graduates of Devils Lake High School and are all current students of LRSC, said director Casey Paradies.  Production workers are Paige Prekker, Hannah Hardcastle, and Alex Olson.

Crimes of the Heart won the 1981 Pulitzer Prize and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, Paradies said.
“This play tells the story of the Magrath sisters of Mississippi. Each has her own troubles and is trying to seize the future,” he said.

Lenny, the oldest sister, is unmarried at 30y and facing diminishing marital prospects; Meg, the middle sister, who quickly outgrew their small Mississippi town, is back after a failed singing career on the West Coast; while Babe, the youngest, is out on bail after having shot her husband. Their troubles, grave and yet, somehow, hilarious, are highlighted by their priggish cousin, Chick, and by the awkward young lawyer who tries to keep Babe out of jail while helpless not to fall in love with her.

The production does contain strong language and adult content, Paradies said.
