Devils Lake, ND (WDAZ TV) - One of the best junior college basketball players in the county plays right here in North Dakota.

Kennedy Henningsgard will represent Lake Region State College at the National Junior College all-star weekend later this month.

Henningsgard is one of the leaders on the Lake Region State College Lady Royals. She led the team in scoring, with 14 points a game, and led the team to the national tournament. And that's just on the court.Danny Mertens/Lady Royals Head Coach: “She's gonna be one of our captains on and off the court. She's a 4.0 student. She's accomplished a lot.”

Added to those accomplishments...being named one of the top 40 junior college players in the country. One of the best of the best.

Kennedy Henningsgard/NJCAA All-Star: “I guess you can say that.”

Mertens says, “This is the first time Lake Region has had a participant, man or woman.”

She'll get to show off her game against other top players at the all-star weekend in Florida the last weekend of July.
Henningsgard says, “I'm just looking forward to the experience. It'll definitely be something to remember.”

Coaches say they're proud of Henningsgard's achievements. They also say what she's done on the court has helped raise the profile of the entire Lady Royal team.

Mertens says her achievement is, “putting Lake Region on the map. A chance to put our name out there with some of the best student athletes in the country.”

Of course, Henningsgard says she wouldn't have been honored without her teammates.

She adds, “Gotta give a lot of credit to my team for actually helping me out, getting me this far.”

Henningsgard says she hopes the honor will help springboard both her and the rest of the Lady Royals to even greater heights next season.

The all-star tournament is a showcase for four-year colleges looking to sign junior college players.Henningsgard says her dream is to play for NDSU after leaving Lake Region.
