Peace Officer program sets record

By   Erin Wood

It’s the first triple figure year for Lake Region State College’s Peace Officer Training Program as 100 students graduated from the program in 2015.

The 78th graduating peace officer training class at Lake Region State College puts 2015 – and the program – in the record books.

Twenty-seven students are poised to graduate from the peace officer academy December 17 in the college’s Robert Fawcett Auditorium.  These students combined – with those who graduated from LRSC academies in Bismarck, Minot, Grand Forks, and Fargo in 2015 – create a total of 100 graduates.

“LRSC is fulfilling its mission of filling an industry and employer need in the state,” said Johnathan Maritato, director of LRSC’s peace officer training program. “We surpassed last year’s numbers by one student.”

Previous record graduate numbers include 99 students in 2014 and 92 in 2012.

A strong job market throughout North Dakota has created an interest in the field of law enforcement.

The addition of law enforcement staff to many city and county offices has created high job demand. Many law enforcement career opportunities currently are available in North Dakota as areas of the state grow in population and long-time personnel near retirement, Maritato said.

Lake Region State College offers its one-semester peace officer training program in Devils Lake each fall, in Minot each spring, and summer academies in Fargo and Grand Forks.  The offsite academies are a reality because of partnerships with regional law enforcement agencies and universities.

“We receive interest for all academy locations throughout the year and are poised for strong enrollment numbers in 2016,” Maritato said.

Lake Region State College is the only college in the state of North Dakota authorized to deliver the North Dakota POST Board approved police academy. Successful completion of the program allows graduates to become licensable as peace officers in ND. Instructors for the Peace Officer Training program include more than 40 law enforcement professionals from 16 different law enforcement agencies in ND.

Graduation ceremonies take place Thursday, Dec. 17th at 1:00 pm in Robert Fawcett Auditorium.

The next peace officer training academy begins January 19 and will be held in Minot. A few openings still are available for the Minot academy.  For more information on the LRSC Peace Officer Training program contact Maritato at (701) 662-1526.
