Students advance to international competition

Lake Region State College DECA officers had a goal at the beginning of the year to have more than half of its members qualify for international competition.

DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.

This year LRSC’s DECA chapter has increased its membership to six, said chapter advisor Cindy Brown.

“Out of the six members, five will be attending the International Career Development Conference, also known as ICDC in Orlando, Fla., April 17th to 21st.

“It’s safe to say that our chapter has achieved that goal,” Brown said.

Throughout the course of this year LRSC’s chapter participated in a Chapter Passport program offered through DECA.

“The Chapter Passport is a program that each chapter nation-wide can apply for that outlines all the work the chapters do during the year,” Brown said.

There are three different levels that each chapter may apply for and a chapter may only apply for one. The levels are: Diplomatic, Executive, and Presidential. There are specific requirements for each level that each chapter must complete in order to be qualified. Once a chapter completes those requirements they may complete a certain amount of tasks in sub categories.  After the application is submitted to DECA Inc. they will examine each application and place the chapters within the level they see fit.

Lake Region State College DECA will be receiving the Diplomatic Award at nationals.

“Along with that award, two of our very own members, Brandon Tofte and Bryan Seals, will be receiving a Leadership Award for Collegiate DECA,” Brown said.

The Leadership Award is for members who stand out amongst the rest within the chapter, taking on roles and duties to help the chapter become more successful.

LRSC Collegiate DECA chapter looks to take home a few more awards in the upcoming ICDC.
