Peace Officer Academy to be held in Minot

By   Erin Wood

Applications are being accepted for the Lake Region State College Peace Office Training Academy in Minot for the 2014 spring term. Classes start January 21st.

This is the third spring that LRSC has delivered its one-semester police academy to Minot.

“The Minot academy location gives us the opportunity to provide a needed educational service for western North Dakota in a flexible and accessible manner,” said program director John Maritato.

The Minot session of the program has now taken the place of the LRSC spring campus-based training program. It is a partnership between Lake Region State College, the Ward County Sheriff’s Office, Minot Police Department, and Minot State University.

As a rigorous one-semester course, the police academy is designed for people who wish to pursue a career in law enforcement. From hands-on training of proper weapons handling, crime scene investigation, and emergency vehicle operations to fundamentals of criminal law, traffic law, and report writing, the program is made up of more than 700 performance objectives, Maritato said.

“The program has a 100 percent placement who actively seeks a job in law enforcement after successful completion of the academy,” Maritato said.

Lake Region State College also offers students a way to advance their education by completing an Associate in Applied Science degree in Law Enforcement.  All degree-specific courses are available through distance education of online and/or interactive video.

Compared to other LRSC programs, the application process does require additional forms along with carefully screened eligibility criteria, said Maritato. A Peace Officer Training Application Form, an Admissions Application Form to LRSC, psychological examination, background check, physical exam, and fingerprinting are all part of the application process. As a distance delivery site, students are required to stay within commuting distance of the training location; however housing options may be available through Minot State University.

Those interested in attending the Minot academy should contact LRSC’s Peace Officer Training program at (800) 443-1313 ext.  21683 or by email to

All completed forms should be addressed Attention: Jennifer Jenssen and mailed to Lake Region State College, 1801 College Drive North, Devils Lake, ND 58301.
