Lady Royals' Basketball and Royals Athletics will have a new leader next year.

Lake Region State College announces Daniel Mertens has been named the new Athletic Director and Royals’ Head Women’s Basketball Coach.

Mertens has been Assistant Women’s Coach and Assistant Athletic Director at LRSC. He succeeds Athletic Director and Lady Royals’ Head Coach Duane Schwab. Schwab, who is retiring at the end of the academic year, is in his 25th year leading a successful Lady Royals program.

Dr. Randall Fixen, Vice President of Student Affairs and Athletics says Mertens will be a strong leader for Royals Athletics and that LRSC is excited for Mertens to transfer into his new role.

“Mertens has been a crucial member of the LRSC athletics family. Being able to mentor under Duane Schwab has only better prepared him for this challenge and we look forward to a bright future for the Lady Royals’ basketball program and all of LRSC Athletics,” Fixen said.

A native of Devils Lake, Mertens earned his associate’s degree from Lake Region State College and his bachelor’s from Mayville State University and has been accepted into the Master’s Degree program at Minot State University.
