Royals win two at home

The Lake Region State College Royals softball team won a double header today at Roosevelt Park over Bismarck State College (BSC). The scores were 4-3 in the first game and 8-7 in the 9 inning second game.

Game one saw the Royals have ten hits by eight of the players in the lineup. Two each by Samone Motley and Rebecca Gurski. The Royals took an early two run lead after two innings, but the Mystics of Bismarck State College came back in the 3rd to tie the game. It remained tied until the top of the 7th when BSC scored one run setting the stage for a dramatic ending. With one out in the bottom of the 7th inning, Motley doubled then Breanne Heinrichs singled to drive her in. After a fielders choice by Gurski and two walks by Jenny Mertens and Morgan Titus, Brianne Hunt came up and delivered the game winning hit to drive in Gurski. Breanne Heinrichs pitched the entire seven innings, giving up three runs on nine hits, no walks, and two strikeouts.

In the second game, the Royals fell behind early in the second, but in the third, scored three runs on a double by Rebecca Gurski to score Samone Motley and Breanne Heinrichs. Kya Knoke scored earlier off of a single by Heinrichs. In the 5th inning, the Royals took a 5-2 lead into the 6th, but BSC scored two runs in the top half of the 6th to bring the score to 5-4 in favor of LRSC. In the top half of the 7th inning, BSC score two runs to go ahead in the game setting up another dramatic ending. In the bottom of the 7th, Motley singled, as well as Heinrichs providing Gurski the opportunity to drive in Motley with a single to tie the game. The game went into extra innings and in the 9th inning BSC scored one run, but in the bottom half, Motley again singled followed by singles from Heinrichs and Gurski. The single by Gurski scored Motley to tie the score. After a line out double play, Morgan Titus stepped up to the plate and delivered a looping single over the shortstop to score Heinrichs from 3rd to win the game 8-7. Heinrichs pitched the first 4 innings giving up 2 runs on 4 hits, plus went 5 for 5 at the plate. Titus pitched 2 innings, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits, striking out 1. Gurski pitched the final 3 innings giving up 3 runs on 2 hits and had 4 strikeouts.

The Royals now go into the Region XIII playoffs as the second seed in the tournament and will play Dakota County Technical College on Saturday, May 3rd in Bismarck.
