On Tuesday, Lake Region State College head women's basketball coach Danny Mertens announced the signing of three standout high school athletes for the 2014-2015 campaign. Central Valley’s Kennedy Henningsgard along with Ada-Borup’s Shaina Stevenson and East Grand Forks’ Kelsey Schlenk have signed letter of intents to play for the Royals next season.
“As a first-year head coach, I could not be happier with the signing of all three players,” Mertens told the Journal Wednesday morning.
Henningsgard, a 5-8 guard, was a standout during her career at Central Valley High School. The two-time All-State player scored 1,556 points during her career. She averaged 15.3 ppg and 5.5 rpg this season.
“Kennedy is ready to go,” Mertens stated. “She can play almost anywhere on the floor. She is an excellent all around player who is prepared for the college game.”
Stevenson, a 5-1 guard, helped lead Ada-Borup to the state for the past three years. The 1,000-point scorer earned All-Conference and All-Section honors during her senior season.
“Shaina is very quick and very smart,” Mertens complimented. “She has such strong fundamentals. Throughout her career, she played in big games and that is something that you look for.”
Schlenk is a All-Conference and All-Section player. The guard from East Grand Forks scored 1,000 points during her career.
“Kelsey is a shooter,” the coach said. “She shoots extremely well on a consistent basis. That’s something she really going to bring here.”
In addition to their accomplishments on the court, all three athletes are top students as well, Mertens stated.
“All three are excellent students,” he commented. “We are very excited about the addition of the girls to the program and to the campus.”
