3/30/14 - The Royals softball team competed in the Blue Knights Crossover Tournament this weekend playing 5 games with a record of 1-4. The programs first win came in the first game against NDSCS by the score of 21 to 3. The Royals had 17 hits in the game. Samone Motley had a homerun and all 9 players in the lineup had at least one hit. Breanne Heinrichs, Jenny Mertens and Morgan Titus had triples in the game. Breanne Heinrichs was the winning pitcher surrendering 3 runs (2 earned) with 6 strikeouts and 3 walks.
In the second game, the Royals lost to Dawson Community College by the score of 1to 16. The Royals were only able to get 2 hits off of Dawson's pitcher, Alissa Keeler.. Morgan Titus took the loss for the game giving up 16 hits, with 3 walks and 1 strikeout.
In the game against Century Community College, the Royals lost in extra innings by the score of 7-8. Morgan Titus had 2 home runs in the game collecting 4 RBI's in the process and 3 hits total. Rebecca Gurski had two doubles and Samone Motley had one. Morgan's second home run came in top of the 7th with one out and two runners on base putting the Royals up by two runs. But in the bottom half of the inning Century's first two batters came up with a double and a home run to tie the game. Morgan Titus pitched the first 7 innings with Breanne Heinrichs coming in during the 8th inning but was unable to hold them. Morgan finished giving up 9 hits, 2 walks, and 3 strikeouts. Breanne gave up 1 run on 3 walks.
Game 4 was against Minnesota West. The Royals lost by the score of 5 to 6. In the game, Rebecca Gurski had 2 hits, 1 of them was a home run in the first inning, and scored 2 runs. Breanne Heinrichs and Morgan Titus also had 2 hits in the game. Samone Motley and Brianne Hunt each had one. The Royals had a chance in the bottom of the 7th inning but came up short stranding 2 runners on base. Breanne Heinrichs pitched the entire game striking out 5 and walking 2.
Game 5 of the tournament for the Royals was against Messabi Community College. The score ended up 5 to 8 with the Royals taking the loss. The ladies battled throughout the game and through 4 innings the score was tied 1 to 1. But in the 5th inning Messabi erupted with 3 runs then 4 more in the 6th to take an 8 to 1 lead. In the 6th inning, Kayla Marek walked, Brianne Hunt singled, and Kya Knoke walked to load the bases setting the table for Samone Motley's dramatic grand slam home run pulling the Royals to within 3. For the game, the Royals had 8 hits, Macie Helten doubled twice, Rebecca Gurski had one double, and Brianne Hunt had two singles,. Breanne Heinrichs pitched all 7 innings striking out 7 batters, walking 4, and giving up 8 hits. The Royals are now 1-11 overall and will start conference play next weekend.
