Lady Royals cap perfect Mon-Dak campaign

DEVILS LAKE--A universally respected feat across all sports is the idea of perfection, the prospect of enduring an entire season without suffering a single loss.

On Sunday, the Lady Royals accomplished that with another Mon-Dak win, giving the LRSC team their 10th conference win of the season.

And no losses.

Head coach Duane Schwab, currently coaching in his final season before retirement, has led Lake Region to a 26-4 overall record in 2013-14, including a perfect 10-0 mark in Mon-Dak play, earning his team the No. 1 seed for the Region XIII tournament. For any other team hoping to advance to districts, they’ll have to come through Devils Lake.

The Lady Royals capped their unblemished 2013-14 Mon-Dak campaign with another emphatic win, this time a 90-55 win over Bismarck State College.

Leslie Hairston led all scorers in the game, finishing with 26 points in just 24 minutes on the floor. Jordyn Kirk followed up Hairston’s effort with 14 points of her own along with a game-high eight rebound performance.

My’Kale French (13), Becca Scherr (10), and Sarah Schafer (10) were the other three LRSC scorers to finish in double figures.

“I told the girls about the last time we went undefeated in the conference, and that was really a good feeling,” Schwab said after his team’s 10th conference victory of the season. “I told them that they had a chance to do that, so let’s just go out and play hard like we know we’re capable of.”

The Lady Royals certainly put in an inspired performance for Schwab’s final home game as LRSC coach. It only took a matter of minutes for the fans in attendance to witness the superior team in action.

Hairston got things going with six quick points early on in the first half, helping propel the Lady Royals to an early and emphatic 17-4 lead in the game’s opening few minutes. LRSC led comfortably for the rest of the game.

Lake Region State will play the Mystics again this Wednesday night in the first round of the Region XIII tournment, and despite Sunday night’s lopsided outcome, Schwab still had nothing but good things to say about Bismarck State.

“They’re a nice team,” Schwab said. “They’re explosive. They shoot the three really well.”

Lake Region State will host the Mystics this Wednesday night at the Devils Lake Sports Center, with tip off scheduled for 7 p.m.
