|The Lady Royals may be road weary after their weekend trip to Montana, but that didn’t stop them from stretching their current win streak to 11 Monday night in New Town. |
Lake Region State defeated Fort Berthold for the third time this season on Monday night, 92-63, giving them a perfect 11-0 record heading into the Thanksgiving break, giving the embattled Lady Royals a bit of much needed rest.
LRSC head coach Duane Schwab was quick to point out his team’s sluggishness in the Fort Berthold game, particularly in the first half, something that he attributes to life on the road.
“We were terrible in the first half. Very sloppy,” Schwab said. “You’ve gotta come out ready to play every game, no matter who it is, and I know we’ve beat (Fort Berthold) twice already. But, to me, we were a step slow defensively. We didn’t apply the pressure that we normally do.
“But I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that we’re all a little tired. Hopefully that’s what it was."
Both the LRSC men’s and women’s teams didn’t arrive back in Devils Lake from Montana until 1:30 a.m. early Sunday morning, an admittedly short turnaround for the Lady Royals, who after a light shoot-around on Sunday had to withstand another long bus ride to New Town on Monday night.
But no matter how tired the Lady Royals may have been, they still had no problem disposing of Fort Berthold by nearly 30 points, led by a Leslie Hairston double-double (18 points, 11 rebounds). Hairston was one of five LRSC players to finish in double figures.
But, like Schwab said, his team didn’t quite come out with the same intensity they usually do, and despite the game’s lopsided outcome, LRSC players and coaches alike know that they can do better.
“They were just disappointed in their play, also,” Schwab said abotu his team’s first-half performance. “When we came out in the second half, we came out running a little bit more.”
Thankfully for the Lady Royals, they’ll have a lengthy stretch of days off during the Thanksgiving holiday to rest and recover before the team’s next game, another non-conference bout, this time against St. Thomas JV at 3 p.m. Dec. 4 in Minneapolis, Minn.
In other LRSC Women’s Basketball news, Sarah Schafer underwent surgery on her gall bladder Monday, a procedure that will reportedly keep her sidelined for at least a week.
My’Kale French, who has been bothered by an anke injury in recent games, played in Monday night’s game in new Town, finishing the contest with seven points and four assists. Whatever discomfort her ankle might be causing her will surely be sorted out following the long weekend.
