Tips for International Students

Working in the U.S.

U.S. Immigration regulations prohibit international students from working off campus during their first academic year. International students may work on-campus up to 20 hours per week and there are many on-campus jobs available. After the first academic year, international students may seek off-campus work in their fields of study as part of a cooperative education program. While enrolled at LRSC, international students must communicate with the International Student Advisor regarding employment.

Health Insurance

International students are required to purchase a health insurance policy provided by United Healthcare. Please discuss the policy with the International Student Advisor. (Canadian and Norwegian students are exempt from the health insurance purchase requirement.)

Clothing/Bedding

LRSC provides a basic set of bedding and towels, and a land-line telephone for international students. Students will need warm winter clothing but may want to wait to purchase these items until after arrival. LRSC staff will assist students with winter clothing purchasing decisions, as requested. Luggage is sometimes delayed, so students should place essential supplies and a warm sweater or jacket in their carry-on bag.

kahlil.png"My first week at Lake Region State College, I struggled because the flight was the longest I have ever had. It was a 30 hour flight and I was very tired. The second day I did the registration for new students and I enjoyed the activities and the party during Welcome Week. I am satisfied with my  study abroad experience because I can see different cultures and different people. My favorite thing about studying at LRSC is that you see people from other countries."
